The Realization of Nanotechnology

Abstract

The practical realization of nanotechnology requires the output of any nanofacturing process to be carefully specified. This leads naturally to the voluntary adherence to standards, a prerequisite for sustainable trade. Both standardization and specification require an effective metrology. Nanometrology poses particular challenges, but industry has risen to them and nowadays the provision of instruments capable of measuring a wide range of attributes with nanoscale resolution is an important industry in its own right.
