The regulation of the nano-industry is outlined. Although regulatory activity is presently in a state of active development, making it difficult to characterize the present framework in much detail, at present it is strongly based on extensions to existing provisions regulating chemicals and drugs, and their effects on human safety and the environment, and it is often ineffectual when applied to nanomaterials. Self-regulation by the industry itself may be better than a semblance of official oversight if the regulatory agencies have become contaminated by venality, coupled with a well-informed public able to make its own decisions about what to consume.
