A pay gap is the difference between the average hourly earnings (excluding overtime) of two categories of staff in an organization: women and men (the gender pay gap), employees from different ethnic groups, and those with and without disabilities. The pay gap is expressed as a proportion of the average hourly earnings (excluding overtime) of one of those categories. For example, a 10 per cent gender pay gap denotes that women earn on average 10 per cent less than men.
