Although dragons take on very different roles in myths and legends, they often display physical or behavioral characteristics that allow them to be categorized into distinct groupings. Different sources may provide conflicting descriptions of the types of dragons, but this chapter uses the most popular and logical nomenclature for each classification. You’ll find some creatures that may not appear very dragonlike, but they belong here because they function as dragons in certain regional mythologies. Keep in mind that the categories in this book are by no means comprehensive—new species of dragons pop up all the time!
