7.1 Introduction

This chapter looks at some studio items that are often taken for granted, but are actually quite significant. Monitor speakers (see Figure 7.1) are used to listen to sound in the studio. They convert the audio signal, stored on recording media like computers, digital recorders, CDs, or tape, back into sound that can be heard. The sound that comes from them is the final product, so they are very important in determining a production’s overall quality. What you hear on the monitor speakers should be the most accurate gauge of what you recorded and what the listener will hear.
