CHAPTER 2Understanding Agentic AI

“As we build AI systems, we’re building our future. Let’s make it one we want to live in.”

—Stuart Russell

DECONSTRUCTING INTELLIGENCE AND AGENCY

On a warm summer day in 1907, a young patent clerk sat at his desk in Bern, Switzerland, contemplating a profound puzzle. Albert Einstein wasn’t satisfied with the existing theories of physics—something didn’t add up.

He knew the established laws of motion and gravity, the clockwork precision of the Newtonian universe. Yet, anomalies persisted, tiny cracks in the edifice of classical physics. To reconcile these discrepancies, Einstein didn’t just tinker with existing equations; he embarked on a journey of super-abstraction.

Through a remarkable feat of abstract thinking, he imagined himself riding alongside a beam of light. This simple yet powerful thought experiment would eventually lead him to revolutionize our understanding of the universe through his theory of relativity.

In his journey, he questioned the very nature of time and space, concepts considered immutable and absolute for centuries. To fit all the pieces together, to resolve the inconsistencies he observed, he conceived of a radical idea: time is not constant; it is relative, dependent on the observer’s motion. This leap, unthinkable at the time, wasn’t born from incremental improvements but from a fundamental re-evaluation of core assumptions. It was an act of profound intellectual agency, driven by the ability to construct an entirely ...
