CHAPTER 4The Five Domains of Change
“The illiterate of the twenty-first century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”
—Alvin Toffler
Imagine the world awakening to a new symphony, one composed not of strings and horns, but of algorithms and intelligent agents. A quote attributed to a few authors, including Microsoft’s founder, Bill Gates, expressed a recurrent theme about people’s perception on how quickly technology can change reality “Most people overestimate what can be done in one year and underestimate what can be done in 10 years.”
Indeed, when it comes to the agentic future, most people will have difficulty grasping the potential big changes ahead of us. We’ve explored the inner workings of these intelligent systems—their cognitive architectures, decision-making processes, and learning mechanisms. Now, it’s time to turn our attention outward, to the world they are rapidly transforming.
In this chapter, we board on a journey through the five “domains of change,” the key areas where agentic AI is set to reshape our world most dramatically. Think of these domains as the major movements in our AI symphony: home and personal life, work and career, education and learning, healthcare and well-being, and entertainment and leisure. Each domain represents a distinct area of human experience, yet all are interconnected, influenced, and transformed by the rising tide of intelligent agents.
