Chapter 7. Security
Security in the cloud isn’t a nice-to-have anymore. It’s the bedrock everything else rests on. As cyber threats keep evolving, both in number and complexity, staying safe requires more than just hoping your provider has things covered. Cloud providers and customers each play a part in keeping systems and data secure.
Threats come in all shapes and sizes: phishing attempts, ransomware, denial-of-service attacks, zero-day vulnerabilities you won’t see coming. Knowing what’s out there is important, but awareness alone won’t be enough. Strong security relies on multiple layers—encryption, access controls, constant monitoring—all working together to create a solid defense.
In this chapter, we’ll focus on what you need to know for the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam when it comes to security. We’ll cover the AWS shared responsibility model and walk through the core principles of defense-in-depth. You’ll get a clear look at best practices for managing access and protecting data, and we’ll look at key AWS tools like GuardDuty, CloudTrail, and the KMS—the ones that tend to pop up on the exam.
Why Security Matters
Cybersecurity didn’t start as a formal discipline. It grew out of necessity—a need that emerged the moment computers became networked in the 1960s. Once systems could communicate, the idea of sending software from one machine to another became possible. This is when a door that attackers could use was created.
Since those early days, the cybersecurity ...
