I wish I didn’t have to write this—and that you didn’t need to read it—but a variety of issues, such as timing, among others, make it necessary.
Much of this book relies on a package of functions named rethinking. These functions help the aspiring Bayesian analyst carry out three basic types of analysis: grid approximation, quadratic approximation, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo. My expectation is that learning to use the functions in the rethinking package helps to lay the groundwork for the more complex functionality built into RStan. (RStan is the C++ code that provides an interface between R and the Stan code itself.)
