Affordable Care Act (ACA)—Legislation passed by Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2010, including a “Patient’s Bill of Rights.”
Accountable care organization (ACO)—A group of physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare providers who come together voluntarily, as part of cooperative frameworks to deliver care in the most effective and low-cost settings in conjunction with the Affordable Care Act and other government-sponsored initiatives, and to give coordinated high-quality care to patients. ACOs coordinate care from primary to acute care, depending on the needs of the patient.
