The WebExtensions API is the secret sauce of browser extensions. It allows them to reach into the web page and the browser to make changes, inspect and modify network traffic, and control aspects of the native browser’s user interface.

Global API Namespace

All extensions are accessible from inside the global API namespace. This is either available via the chrome.* namespace, or the browser.* namespace.

• Chromium browsers and Safari favor the chrome.* namespace
