A file is nothing but a collection of records and each line of the data is recorded in the file. The record is a group of related data items. All data items related to students, employees, customers, etc. are nothing but records. In other words, file is a collection of numbers, symbols and texts placed onto the secondary devices like hard disk, pen drive and compact disk.
