If you've been around the networking world for a while, you'll certainly recognize network blocks identified with slash notation, such as 10.0.0.0/8 or 209.69.8.0/23. If you know what these are, you can skip this appendix. Otherwise, read on.
An IP address is simply a 32-bit number assigned to particular network device. Rather than expressing that 32-bit number as a single number, IP addresses are usually shown broken up into four 8-bit numbers ranging from 0 to 255.
