A few months ago, someone told me they bought one of my books and wanted me to sign it, then as a gag handed me a Kindle with a felt marker. I was sorely tempted to mark up their Kindle, but it occurred to me that I could, in fact, sign an ebook. I just had to use a digital signature, with all the security APIs that entailed. Instead of signing the whole ebook, however, I could generate a Certificate of Ownership for the buyer that would have my own scanned signature on it and digitally sign that. I could even add a QR code linking to a verification endpoint, so the buyer could show off their certificate and could verify it.

The result would be …​ wait for it …​ a self-signed certificate signed with my own self-signed certificate.¹ Funny, right? Thunderous applause, try the veal, and don’t forget to tip your waitstaff.
