Abstract:
Treatment of coronary artery disease using angioplasty in conjunction with drugs has progressed significantly over the past 10 years. Balloon angioplasty is an ingenious, minimally invasive alternative to open heart surgery as a means of restoring vital blood flow to heart muscles but it often results in renarrowing of the arteries. Stents have been successfully used to reduce this by providing mechanical support to the artery and, more recently, by coating the stent with drugs designed to reduce excessive scar tissue formation that can result from contact of the arterial wall with the balloon.
