The selvage is the woven, bound border across the lengthwise edge of the fabric. It is “finished” in that it is a thin strip of tight weave that will not unravel.
The grain refers to the direction of the threads making up the fabric. The straight grain refers to the threads parallel to the selvage, running lengthwise on the fabric (the warp). The cross grain refers to the threads perpendicular to the selvage, running the width of the fabric (the weft). The bias is a 45-degree diagonal between the straight grain and the cross grain. Pattern pieces indicate a grain line, so line your fabric up accordingly!
