It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

A solid foundation in the fundamental Maya concepts will greatly ease your development efforts. Since you will be working within the framework of the Maya system, it is important to understand how this system works. Any system imposes a set of constraints on what it is you can and cannot do. While Maya is, undoubtedly, extremely flexible in terms of what you can achieve, there are some fundamental rules that simply must be learned and adhered to.
