A firewall in a building is a fireproof wall that helps to prevent fire from spreading throughout the structure. In computer security, firewalls prevent the spread of unwanted, unauthorized, or malicious network traffic.

Firewalls are implemented in different forms. You can provide layered security by using multiple firewall structures. A firewall is either a hardware device or a software application, network-based or host-based, and a network-layer or application-layer filter. In this chapter, we'll take a look at software application firewalls that are host-based and that operate at the Network layer.
