On September 25, 2000, Kevin Hines was sitting alone in the back of a bus traveling to the Golden Gate Bridge. While most passengers on the bus were eager tourists, Hines had very different plans. He was making the trip to end his life.

The bus stopped near the bridge. With grave hesitation and as a last-ditch effort to derail his own suicide, Hines sheepishly approached the bus driver, hoping the driver would see the pain he was in and intervene by simply asking, “Are you OK?”
