While many tend to think of armor in terms of the metal plating worn by medieval knights, there is actually a wide variety of materials that armor—both "real" and for costumes/cosplay—can be made out of. Some of these include plastics such as ABS, Styrene, Sintra board, Worbla, or HIPS (High-Impact Styrene), which can all be heat-molded to various degrees; fiber glass; foam such as EVA (which can also be heat-molded); and even papier-mâché and cardboard. We'll take a brief look at some of the different materials and the different techniques used to create various types of armor, as well as demonstrate how to build armor pieces using one of them.
