There are two phases to strategic thinking. The first involves understanding an important principle of critical thought. The second involves using that understanding strategically to produce mental change in ourselves. In this chapter and the next, we move back and forth between important understandings and strategies based on them. Strategic thinking is the regularization of this practice. From understanding to strategy—and from strategy to self-improvement—is the pattern we are looking for.
