Chapter 9. Scaling Cloud-Native Multimodal AI Data Pipelines
Scaling is where abstraction meets the physical world. In distributed systems, scalability is not a milestone to be reached and set aside; it is an ever-present constraint. It reshapes every assumption you make about resource allocation, latency, cost, and correctness.
Multimodal AI makes scaling even harder. Traditional pipelines often scale in just one dimension, such as by handling more records, supporting additional users, or running over more training epochs. Multimodal pipelines demand asymmetric scaling. They must handle high-resolution imagery, irregular telemetry bursts, longform text, and generative inference, each operating with distinct cadences, memory demands, and burst patterns. These differences go beyond variations in input. They represent structural challenges that propagate through every stage of the system, from ingestion and transformation to training and serving.
To ground this challenge, in this chapter we introduce Atlas Health AI, a fictional but technically rigorous nationwide backbone for multimodal healthcare infrastructure. Even if you have never worked inside a hospital, the core challenges of scaling health data will feel familiar.
As a data engineer for multimodal AI, you will need to solve for ICU telemetry that arrives in millisecond bursts, radiology scans that land in irregular batches, clinician notes that appear as unstructured text, and inference pipelines that must respond under ...
