Chapter 10. Model Deployment and Serving for Multimodal AI
Up to this point, we have treated multimodal AI largely as a data-engineering problem. We’ve examined how to ingest diverse streams, transform them into coherent features, store and retrieve them efficiently, and orchestrate them at scale. But enterprise AI systems come alive in the real world only when multimodal reasoning is the foundation for decision and action.
This transition is most visible in enterprise robotics, where inference is not an endpoint but the operating loop itself. A robot inspecting a telecom tower or navigating a data center must process multimodal signals in real time, under strict latency and safety budgets. Inference here is a live data pipeline that ingests, aligns, and fuses sensory streams and then returns predictions that drive behavior. At this stage, data engineering merges into what we might call inference engineering: the design of multimodal pipelines that operate not in the cloud alone but in the real world, under latency, safety, and reliability constraints.
To make these ideas concrete, we anchor this chapter with an example featuring Eighteen Labs, a fictional company integrating LBMs with enterprise robotics platforms across multiple industries. Its systems power robots that pick and scan products in warehouses, inspect cooling fans and cable racks in data centers, deliver supplies in hospitals, monitor industrial equipment for predictive maintenance, and even guide customers through ...
