And in conclusion…
In 2017, when we were invited to write the first edition of this book, there was a relatively sparse field of references to choose from and the issues of ethics applied to data were still more often than not seen as the purview of academics and activists, often in isolation from each other. However, there was a growing awareness of the need for more ethical approaches to data management and the development of better ways of managing the ethical trade-offs that arise even when trying to use data for social benefit. As we wrote in the conclusion to the first edition:
