Part II. Why Data Mesh?

By doubting we are led to question, by questioning we arrive at the truth.

Pierre Abélard

Organizational transformation is difficult, costly, and takes time. Data mesh transformation is no exception. The story of Daff, Inc. (Prologue: Imagine Data Mesh), and the description of data mesh principles in Part I demonstrate the substantial impact of data mesh on data culture, architecture, and technology and how this affects how an organization values, shares, and uses analytical data at scale.

So why should any organization make this shift, and why now? I will answer these questions in Part II of the book.

In Chapter 6, “The Inflection Point”, I will look at the macro drivers, the current realities that have pushed us to a tipping point, where our past evolutionary approaches no longer serve us. In Chapter 7, “After the Inflection Point”, I introduce the core outcomes of data mesh and how it achieves them. And in the last chapter of Part II, Chapter 8, “Before the Inflection Point”, I briefly review the history of analytical data management architecture and why what got us here will no longer take us to the future.
