12 A Brief Overview of the Barker/Oracle-Like Model

12.1 INTRODUCTION

There are many variations of entity-relationship ER diagrams. One such model was introduced by Richard Barker (1990). The Barker model was adopted and modified slightly by the Oracle Corporation. In this chapter, we introduce the conventions used in the Barker/Oracle-like model as it applies to our ER Design Methodology. We depict major concepts of the ER diagrams of both Barker and Oracle. Our combined Barker/Oracle-like model is not meant as a primer on the “pure model” of either party, but the transition to the ER diagram of Barker or Oracle will be minor.
