In this chapter you will be introduced to the DB2 family of products that run on the Linux, UNIX, and Windows operating systems. This version of DB2 is often referred to as the distributed version to differentiate it from the DB2 for z/OS® version that runs on an IBM mainframe.
DB2 has the ability to store all kinds of electronic information. This includes traditional relational data, data encoded within XML as well as structured and unstructured binary information, documents and text in many languages, graphics, images, multimedia (audio and video), information specific to operations like engineering drawings, maps, insurance claims forms, ...
