13Measurement‐Based Analysis of Large Systems: Case Studies
13.1 Introduction
The previous chapter presented the techniques employed in the measurement‐based analysis of large‐scale clusters and substantiated them with relevant examples. This chapter provides detailed case studies to illustrate the use of concepts and techniques described in the preceding chapter. Specifically, we focus on the failure characterization of three different computing platforms: (i) a cloud‐based Software‐as‐a‐Service (SaaS) platform that supports business data processing [1], (ii) a high‐performance supercomputing platform that supports a high volume of computationally intensive scientific and engineering applications [2], and (iii) autonomous vehicle (AV) technology [3].
13.2 Case Study I: Failure Characterization of a Production Software‐as‐a‐Service Cloud Platform
The SaaS platform analyzed in this case study uses virtualization technology and is deployed over several processing nodes (i.e. application servers) and database servers. The application server is responsible for the communication between the thin client used by the users (e.g. web browsers) and the platform core services. It collects user business data and dispatches the data to the specific components downstream in charge of the needed processing (e.g. inventory or sales accounting). The database server is responsible for storing raw and processed data, as well as tracking the status of the computation of the platform components ...
