Dave Smith and his company Sequential Circuits, Inc. invented Vector Synthesis (VS) and introduced the ProphetVS in 1986. Not long after, Yamaha acquired Sequential Circuits and incorporated vector synthesis in the SY22/SY35/TG33 synths. Dave Smith and some of the original VS team members then moved to Korg Research and Development to design the Wavestation family of synthesizers, which were all vector synths. A fundamental goal in synthesis is creating sounds that evolve in both time and frequency.
