In Chapter 1 we discussed the core concepts of the WBEM initiative and, briefly, some of the existing enterprise management data gatherers, such as the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and Desktop Management Interface (DMI). Chapter 2 further develops those definitions and provides a more detailed overview of both SNMP and DMI. Although DMI is not a complete enterprise management solution, it does play an important role in desktop management. Its inclusion in our discussion is justified because of its popularity and because it manages one of the most prominent components in the enterprise, the desktop computer.
