Preface to the Second Edition

The preface to the first edition, which has been altered slightly to update its contents, follows after this section. It is the main preface to this book. The purpose of this second edition, its intended audience, and our reasons for writing it are the same as those described in the preface to the first edition. In this second edition, we have attempted to correct and improve the original text in response to comments from colleagues, students, and other friends who have suggested ways to clarify and improve the book.
