Chapter 9

Problems

9.1. A fault occurred on the 345-kV line L1 shown in Fig. 9.1. The fault was caused by icing formation on the line insulator during an ice storm. The DFR record of substation X, shown in Fig. 9.2, documents the three-phase line currents, neutral current, and line-side three-phase-to-neutral voltages of line L1:

a. Classify the fault type.

b. Determine the fault incident point on the faulted phase voltage trace.

c. Explain the fault mechanism scenario.

d. Explain how a local DFR fault record can be used to determine the remote-end clearing time of a line fault.

e. Determine the total clearing times of the local X and remote Y ends of the faulted line.

f. Explain the nature of the varying current magnitudes for phase A current.

g. Explain the increase in the phase A current few a cycles prior to interruption.

h. Is any current reversal shown in the DFR record? Explain your answer.

i. Does this operation exhibit a sequential clearing phenomenon? If yes, state the reasons behind sequential clearing, the effect on power system operation, and how this effect can be eliminated.

9.2. A fault occurred on feeder L1 of the power system ...
