Briggs began with preliminary,
exploratory sketches, done
on a beach near his home.
In sketch 1, the pose was too
impersonal and the diagonal
lines did not contribute
to a feeling of repose and
introspection. While more
engaging, sketch 2 was too
melodramatic and active. In

again contradict the quiet
