Chapter 7DSA and 5G Adaptation to Military Communications
5G applications are not limited to cellular. Many industries are attempting to leverage the bandwidth released for 5G and the capabilities developed for cellular applications to build enterprise wireless systems that are based on 5G spectrum, protocol stack, and open source protocols to build new high capacity private wireless systems. One of these industries is the military communications field. Most concerns regarding the use of 5G technologies with military applications are related to security and vulnerabilities. Thus, the most important aspect in bringing 5G capabilities to military communications is addressing security and vulnerabilities concerns.
There are many security challenges that face adapting 5G to military communications that can be addressed with DSA techniques. Security challenges can be addressed in multiple fronts but the DSA front is very critical. When military communications technologies were in their infant phase at the start to the middle of the twentieth century, transmission security (transec) was an important capability to consider. The designers of military radios invested in research and development of powerful transec techniques. Considerable efforts were given to building hardware, such as high end oscillators that can allow for fast frequency hopping to make military radios overcome jammers. When it comes to considering 5G for military communications, the parallel concept to these infant ...
