This is just a small book about Perl, and we selected only some of the most valuable topics that we wanted to pass along to the intermediate Perl programmer. The first edition of this book was published when the Perl canon and community were still small. Now both are much larger, and there’s a lot more available to you.

Learning Perl, Fifth Edition, by Randal L. Schwartz, Tom Phoenix, and brian d foy (Sebastopol, CA: O’Reilly Media, 2008). This is the canonical book for starting with Perl. You’ll get just enough Perl to handle the 80% of the language that you’ll use every day.
