
Preface
My original motivation for writing this series of books, Elements of Mechanics, Properties
of Materials, and Electricity and Magnetism, was to provide students attending my classes
with advance copies of notes for each lecture. Successive accretions of explanatory material
[much of it gener ated in response to student questions] transformed this project into something
more substantial, which could be read as
• A sole source for a sequence of introductory physics classes
• A student supplement to a standard textbook
• A review in preparation for graduate/professional/comprehensive examinations
