In this chapter, we look at the deployment of Internet services by an enterprise. Email serves as an example of an enterprise capability. The chapter examines the following:
• Fundamentals of Internet service, notably email
• Email formatting and transmission
• Email security issues
• Enterprise firewalling and point of presence
15.1 Internet Services
When typical users think of Internet services, they think of commercial services provided through Web pages. A few also may think of email. To provide Internet services, an enterprise connects itself to the Internet and provides hosts for the appropriate services. We discuss Internet connections in Section 15.5.
