Now that you've gotten a taste of all the creative ways to communicate your work, you may be tempted to dive right in and start producing elegant charts, engaging blog posts, and smart tweets. It's natural to gravitate toward the most tangible (and fun) tasks at hand. Your work will stand a much better chance at making an impact, however, if you step back and think about what you are trying to achieve and how you will get it done. In other words, you need a plan.

In this chapter, I discuss how to build an overarching communications strategy that weaves together the lessons from the previous chapters into a single, focused plan. Taking the time to plan your dissemination approach, rather than jumping into products and tactics, will help you in three ways. First, it will help you set clear goals for communicating your research. Second, it will help you use your resources most efficiently. And third, it will help you know if your strategy was successful.

We'll go step-by-step through the “Policy Impact Plan” worksheet, which you can find at the end of this chapter and on the book's website (https://www.urban.org/ElevatetheDebateBook).
