Abstract:
With increasing need for fuel economy improvement, there is a great deal of interest in using polymer matrix composites to produce lightweight vehicles. This chapter provides an overview of the failure modes of two types of polymer matrix composites for automotive and road transportation applications. One of them is a random fiber sheet molding compound (SMC) composite which has many current applications in automobiles, light trucks and heavy trucks.
