It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Welcome to the world of editing. You are in for a real treat. Final Cut Express is without doubt a great editor to work with. It allows the person driving the interface to work with precision and power. You can do everything from cutting, to sound mixing, titles, effects, compositing, ... the list goes on. Eighty years ago Eisenstein (more of him later) was cutting with a blade – we now cut with tools which are infinitely more effective.
Do not be afraid of this technology – it works and it is not hard to use. You will need to master a few techniques and you will then be well on your way to producing films which are truly professional in structure, technique and their ability to tell stories.
