In every sentence, you find two key pieces of information: an action or a state of being, and the someone or something that is doing that action or experiencing that state of being. The acting or being part is expressed by a verb. The someone or something part is represented by a subject.
You probably have lots of experience finding subjects and verbs; that task begins in early elementary school and doesn’t let up until you’re holding a diploma. That’s why I don’t go into great depth explaining what subjects and verbs are in this chapter; I just offer some rapid reminders.
I then move on to making subjects and verbs agree with each other. That task is a bit more difficult, and the presence of certain subjects and verbs makes it even more challenging.
