The chemistry of the transition metals is dominated by the presence of partly filled d-orbitals. Not only does this give rise to variable oxidation states, but key properties such as magnetism and colour are also directly related to the distribution of electrons among the available orbitals. In this and the following chapter we will explore the role of symmetry in understanding the electronic spectra of transition metal compounds. This is a complex area and the aim of these chapters is to give insights into how symmetry can be used to explain the origins of the observed spectra.
