The detailed surface geometry is typically more complicated.
Some proposed structures of adsorption sites are disulfide bonding
(Fig. 7.17a), a complex that involves an Au adatom binding to
the thiolate (Fig. 7.17b), and a polymeric chain structure with
monothiolates bridging Au adatoms (Fig. 7.17c).
Jones et al. [39, 40] indicate Au top-site adsorptions of thiolates,
which would prove that there are mobile Au–SR complexes on the
