Part I. Introduction and Background
In this book’s first part, I set the stage for all that will follow. This includes introducing the three main forms of Business Analytics, the central problem with solely using Predictive Analytics and the role and importance of Prescriptive Analytics in a business decision environment. I pay special attention to the role of uncertainty in decision making and uncertainty’s probabilistic nature. Because of this probabilistic feature, I include a probability primer in Part II.
Finally, I will provide an overview of the major Prescriptive Analytics methods commonly used by practitioners and the ones I will focus on. To add structure to what I will discuss and make it easier for you to follow the methods, I will regroup them into two broad classes, Non-stochastic and Stochastic, that form Parts III and IV of the book, respectively.
