It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
12章Webを学ぶ
これまでの章ではJavaScriptの言語仕様†1に含まれる内容だけを説明してきました。それらはWebやWebブラウザとは基本的に無関係です。サンプルコードの確認にはWebブラウザの開発者ツールを使用していましたが、これはあくまでもJavaScriptの実行環境としての利用です。内容は純粋にプログラミング言語としての機能を説明するものであって、ブラウザからはほぼ独立していました。
今ではJavaScriptの活用領域はサーバサイドでのサービス開発からモバイル端末向けのアプリケーション開発、果ては組み込みアプリケーション開発まであらゆる分野に広がり、Webに限定されてはいません。そのためまずどのような環境でも利用できる汎用的な内容を紹介しましたが、とはいえJavaScriptがもともとはWebブラウザ上のコンテンツに動的な要素を加えるために始まった言語だということは否定できない事実です。現在でもJavaScriptが最も活用されている領域はWebアプリケーション開発です。いつになったらWebの話が始まるのだろうと不安に思っていた人もいるかもしれません。
たいへんおまたせしました。この章からはWebサイトのコンテンツを操作することから始まり、ブラウザの機能を利用してネットワーク通信やマルチメディアの使用、果てはハードウェア機能の利用など、さまざまな用途でJavaScriptを活用する方法の説明に入ります。
