Conventional HSMMs*
Abstract
The general HSMM is reduced to the conventional models when specific assumptions are made on the dependency of states and durations. This chapter discusses four conventional HSMMs that are traditionally treated as the extensions of HMMs, and named as “explicit duration HMM,” “variable transition HMM,” “residual time HMM,” and “variable-transition and explicit-duration combined HMM.” These four models have fewer parameters and lower computational complexity than the general HSMM, and are the HSMMs often found in the literature.
