1.3.1 Firewalls
The use of fi rewalls at the border of the network can control the fl ow
of traffi c between the local network and the Internet [18, 20]. Based
on the characteristics of the network traffi c, to include requested
services, source and destination addresses, and individual users, a
fi rewall will make a decision on whether to allow the traffi c to pass
through the network. Firewalls can also be utilized on individual
host based systems.
However, there are recognized shortfalls with the use of fi rewalls
to protect a network.
The shortcomings associated with a fi rewall include the following:
1. The fi rewall cannot protect against attacks that bypass it.
