Let's talk about a guy named Ryan.
Ryan owned a business, but he was having some challenges from his team with deadlines. He would say, verbatim, “I need this ASAP.” He would say that all the time, no matter what.
But one time, he got called to the mat for needing something ASAP.
He had asked his team to finalize a video package delivery. His marketing manager worked late; she put everything else on hold to get this done. After she submitted the finished product to Ryan, she was shocked that Ryan hadn't reviewed it yet. It turned out that Ryan hadn't planned on presenting the video for two weeks, but he had told everyone it needed to be done ASAP.
The manager was furious. She had pushed everything aside, assuming that the project needed to be done on short notice, and it just so happened that he didn't need it for the next two weeks. Had she known how much time he had, she could have not only given Ryan better quality, but she also could have gotten her other work done.
This made Ryan realize there was a clear lack of communication. He hadn't told his manager everything she needed to know, and now she felt like she'd been suckered.
