We're going to switch gears a little bit now. Think of what has come before as the fundamentals of this art called leadership. But now, we move you on up—toward mastery. And mastery in leadership is manifest, in my experience and in that of those you've read about so far in this book, in four ways. First let me explain.
Leadership is deeply personal, shaped by your individual traits, experiences, and values. In this chapter, we explore the concept of Leadership DNA—your unique combination of strengths, blind spots, and the core qualities that define how you lead. Understanding your personal Leadership DNA helps uncover the essence of your leadership style, offering a personalized approach that resonates with authenticity and purpose.
That said, just as DNA has four chemical bases—A (Adenine), C (Cytosine), G (Guanine), and T (Thymine)—so, too, are there four “base leadership types.” You, in all your uniqueness, are going to match one of the four more closely than you match any of the others. I like to call these the Four Leadership Archetypes because they supersede all of our unique leadership stories, the story of how we wound up in leadership. Our leadership type describes us similarly to a personality test, but it also prescribes us. That is, the archetype can advise us on how to best leverage our uniqueness as people in our position of power.
