Abstract

This chapter explores the role of virtual intelligent characters, AGI (artificial general intelligence), and ASI (artificial superintelligence) in the future of the Metaverse along the parallel tracks of speculative fiction and current technology innovation. This includes looking back at speculative fiction narratives of artificial intelligence (AI), comparing embodied AI to virtual AI, and the history of chatbots and NPCs, which are intertwined regarding the future of virtually intelligent characters, now becoming known as SmartNPCs or generative agents. ...
